The LORD is gracious and righteous; our God is full of compassion. The LORD protects the simple-hearted; when I was in great need, he saved me. - Psalm 116:5-6
A father’s reflection:
“The other day I was placing my son in his infant car seat. We needed to drive somewhere, so that necessitated having to place him in his car seat, and then have to strap him in tightly w/ the safety belts. As he recognized that he was losing his mobility and freedom to move, he began to cry and protest adamantly. Even though he tossed and struggled, I knew that I had to finish buckling him in to ultimately ensure his safety.”
"Having to do something against your crying baby’s wishes for his own good is not a fun experience. You know that he’s extremely upset, yet you proceed because you know what’s best for him."
Our relationship with God is like this. We love to experience the bliss and comfort of just being held in His arms. We love the freedom to dance, jump & run as we marvel in His creation. However, God, in His sovereignty, always knows what is best for us. And sometimes he straps us in because He is doing it for own good.
We don’t always see it that way, because in our myopic perspective, our sense of freedom and liberty is being restrained. We don’t realize that God is protecting us from harm or evil; we don’t see the goodness of His long-term plan for us. We kick and scream at the slightest discomfort in our lives without realizing that God has the greater picture in mind.
God knows what’s best for us. We can either choose to kick and scream like an infant, or we can place our trust in Him knowing that He is good and that He loves us.
*Lord, please help me to place my trust in You in all things. I want to surrender my selfish desire to completely be in control of my life. I know that you see the bigger picture, and You always want what’s best for me.”
