Sailing the Open Seas

on Tuesday, December 6, 2011

"Now it came to pass on a certain day, that he went into a ship with his disciples: and he said unto them, Let us go over unto the other side of the lake. And they launched forth." Luke 8:22

In each of our lives there are seasons; times of preparation, times of rest, times of learning, times of building and times of being anchored in the harbour. But then there are certain times when Jesus calls and says, 'Let us go over unto the other side'. In other words, let us leave the harbor and venture out into the open seas so that we can go the next leg of the journey.

This is the true test of our faith. These are the times when we are really tested and where the evil one will try his best to demoralize us, to make us fearful, to make us lose hope, to make us think that we cannot take this journey, that we are not good enough, not talented enough, not skilled enough or that we just don't have a good enough team on board or a properly mapped out route to travel.

And he would be right; because in and of ourselves we don't measure up and we don't have the ability. This is why it is so believable when the evil one places all these doubts in front of us, accusing us day in and day out before our Father in heaven.

But, the one thing we somehow forget or lose sight of in our daily lives, in particular in these times, is the power in the name of Jesus. You see, it was Jesus who spoke the right timing, 'that certain day'; it was He who called His disciples, saying, 'let us go'; it was He who plotted the journey, 'the other side the lake'; and it was He who went into the ship with His disciples; for it is He who is our strength, our talent, our wisdom and our guiding light.

Why is it then that we think we are on our own when we are called of the Lord to leave the harbor? Why is it then that we so often end up asking Him to come with us on our journey, when it is actually Him asking us to travel along His already purposed and perfect path for our lives?

Today, let us walk by faith and not by sight. Let us hear our Savior calling us and let us place our confidence and our trust in Him and not in our own abilities or understanding. Today, if He says, 'Let us go over unto the other side of the lake,' may we, without hesitation, fear or doubt, launch forth. What a wonderful thought to be sailing the open seas with Jesus our Captain of the ship!

Prayer for Today:
Dear Father God, thank You that Jesus is alive in me and that He shows me the way to travel in this life. Thank You that when You call for me to get in the ship, that You are right there with me. Please help me to let go of all that would hinder me and weigh me down, that I may truly become excited about sailing the open seas of life with Jesus as my guiding light and the rock of my salvation. AMEN
