Christmas: Gloom & Glory?

on Friday, December 23, 2011

Life can be devastating, leaving us barren and empty, but God is in the business of renewing, reshaping, and rebuilding devastated lives.

We find ourselves today as a nation (Philippines) affected by a catastrophic weather, so vastly deadly. It’s in our times of distress and despair that the enemy causes us to question God and His word.

Faith is all that we have. It is in Lamentations 3:19-24 that Jeremiah declares, “The thought of my suffering and homelessness is bitter beyond words. I will never forget this awful time, as I grieve over my loss. Yet I still dare to hope when I remember this:

“The faithful love of the LORD never ends! His mercies never cease. Great is his faithfulness; his mercies begin afresh each morning. I say to myself, “The LORD is my inheritance; therefore, I will hope in him!”

All we have is our faith!

The hype and commercialization of Christmas, and all the devastation, degradation, and despair in our world cannot overshadow the glory of Christmas.

"When the song of the angels is stilled,

When the star in the sky is gone,

When the kings and the princes are home,

When the shepherds are back with their flocks,

the work of Christmas begins:

to find the lost,

to heal the broken,

to feed the hungry,

to release the prisoner,

to rebuild the nations,

to bring peace ...

to make music in the heart."

In the aftermath of Typhoon "Sendong" (Dec. 16-17, 2011, Philippines - particularly in the cities of Cagayan De Oro and Iligan with more than 1,000 fatalities), the work of Christmas begins:

The evacuation centers and temporary homes for the homeless are the mangers.

The rescue workers, donors, volunteers are the Magi who came for true worship.

The dump trucks carrying relief goods are the camels.

The financial & human resources are the gifts (gold, frankincense, & myrrh).

Exercise your faith. Do the work!

For the glory of God.
