Rescue Rope

on Friday, November 18, 2011

The LORD is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge. He is my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold. Psalm 18:2

Imagine with me for a moment that all of your relationships are strands, threads or ropes. The more time you and the other person spend investing in your relationship, the more strands make up the rope between you two.

If one person says or does evil toward the other, some (or all) of the strands are broken. As time passes, you have several ropes connecting you to different people, some of which are noticeably thicker than others.

Now imagine you find yourself out in the middle of a rushing river having fallen out of a wrecked boat. You're going to want to grab a rope so you can be rescued. Likely, you'll want to grab the thickest rope so that it won't break and has the most strength to pull you to safety.

This should always be your relationship with God. In fact, it should look like a thick rope up against strings compared to all of your other relationships, so that God indeed is the first person you go to in times of trouble.

This is not to say you should weaken the relationships you have with friends or family - not at all! Instead, you should be strengthening your relationship with God the most. It should get attention daily, so that it is constantly growing thicker.

In times of trouble, you'll naturally grab the thickest rescue rope.

*Father God, thank you that you are faithful to us and you are always there for us in our times of trouble. Please forgive us for the times we've reached out to somebody else when we've been drowning in the river of life. Help us build our relationships with you each day such that you are naturally the first person we turn to in times of trouble. Forgive us also when we have cut strands in our rope to you; help us to see the error of our ways. In Jesus’ name, amen!
