Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. Ephesians 6:10-11
Ephesians 6 instructs us in putting on the armor of God to take a stand against Satan and his schemes. One piece of armor mentioned is the "sword of the Spirit". Unlike many other pieces of armor mentioned here, the sword is an offensive piece of armor. It is meant to be used in attacking, slicing or spearing the enemy.
Sometimes I like to think of my spiritual sword like a lightsaber, the weapon of choice in the
Star Wars series of films.
It's like a laser sword that can be turned on or off at the handle; when it's off, all that is present is the handle. When it's on, out protrudes about a 4' laser beam that can slice through almost anything. The thing about a lightsaber is that it's only good if it has electricity to power it. Without electricity, it can't produce a laser beam and therefore is pretty ineffective.
Seeing as they are portable devices, I imagine them to be rechargeable, like cell phones or other electronic devices people often carry. Do you use a cell phone regularly? If so, you probably charge it every day, too. You don't want to have to go without it or end up in a situation where you really need it only to find that it has a dead battery.
So it is with our spiritual lightsaber. We need to charge it every day to be sure it is fully ready for use. This doesn't mean plugging it into an electrical outlet; it means plugging into the Spirit. It means tuning in to what God has to say and what is on His heart. It means resting and recuperating in His presence. When we charge up daily like this, we can face all of the spiritual battles that come our way because the lightsaber is easy to use.
How often do you charge your lightsaber?
Do you find that it's sometimes dead when you're really wishing it had a charge?
If so, think about some ways you can charge it as frequently as, if not more than, your cell phone.
*Father God, please help us to really understand how important it is to constantly be connected to you. Help us to understand our condition without you to the point that it causes change in us. Show us how to be ready for every spiritual battle by abiding in you each day. In Jesus’ name, amen!
