When we are emotionally hurt or abused, it really pains our heart. An aching heart is sometimes even more intolerable than physical pain. A broken heart brings pain which is difficult to endure. Often in these situations there is an after effect of this pain and that is that we begin to build a wall around our heart so that we are not hurt or abused like that again.
As life goes on, this wall we build gets higher and thicker and our hearts are soon surrounded by an impenetrable barrier manifest in so many different ways in our life. The only problem is that the material which we use to build these walls of defense is not blocks of peace, gentleness, forgiveness, unity, love, mercy and grace. Rather, the blocks we use to build these impenetrable walls are often blocks of bitterness, hatred, unforgiveness, anger, resentment, pride, self pity, mercilessness and, well, heartlessness.
As we build these walls we feel justified and safe. 'I refuse to be hurt again' we say. 'In fact I will never allow someone to get so close to me again.'
We often don't realize that as we say these words, we are not only saying them against others, but we are also saying them against Christ. God wants a totally surrendered heart not a heart surrounded by impenetrable walls. God wants a heart He can mould and make into His own, not a heart which is hard and unshapeable. God wants our heart to be open for Him, at the cost of been hurt by others.
Jesus represented the heart of God and He humbled Himself and was as a servant as He allowed the heart of God to always be surrendered to the Father in heaven. Today, don't allow your heart to be hardened but allow it always be open and surrendered to the Father in heaven.
Psalm 73:26 - "My flesh and my heart faileth: but God is the strength of my heart, and my portion for ever."
