Leadership is a Lonely Place!

on Wednesday, July 20, 2011

Study the history of leaders in the Bible, and you’ll discover that they had deep moments of isolation and loneliness.

Moses was frustrated.

Jacob wrestled with God.

Elijah fled to a cave in the wilderness and wanted to die.

Jeremiah cried out in pain.

Nehemiah solemnly assessed Jerusalem alone at night.

Paul wrote that he was forsaken by all men.

Even Jesus Himself suffered alone in the Garden while the disciples slept.

THE FEW
Whether you’re the proprietor of a small local business, the CEO of a large global corporation, or somewhere in-between, leadership is a lonely place. Only a small percentage of the overall population walks in business leadership shoes. Add the fact that you’re also actively seeking to walk in Jesus’ footsteps, and the percentage of business leaders who walk in your shoes gets even smaller.

THE RESPONSIBILITIES
As the leader of your organization, the buck stops with you on everything. In reality, you are the chief strategic planner, R&D director, marketing and sales manager, customer service manager, production manager, HR manager, financial officer and facilities manager. The decision-making pressures and responsibilities can be overwhelming. I’ve often equated business leadership to a rubber band. You’re constantly stretched emotionally, mentally, physically, financially and spiritually. There are times when you reach the breaking point, but then the Holy Spirit kicks into high gear and sustain you. By His power and grace, you get up and keep going.

With a mustard seed of faith, nothing is impossible. You are not alone!

Keep going. Walk with Him. Lead Like Jesus!
