Sled Dogs

on Saturday, June 18, 2011

The members of the council were amazed when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, for they could see that they were ordinary men who had had no special training. They also recognized them as men who had been with Jesus. Acts 4:13

What makes a good sled dog?

According to mushers (who are the people who drive them), it’s certainly not looks. It’s not being purebred. It’s not just strength…..it’s also really desire.

One person described it as “an instinctive desire to pull long and hard through the toughest conditions.” Another musher said, “You’ve got to have dogs that really want to see what is around that next corner.”

What is around the corner for you with God?

What does He have for you, just waiting if you were to make that extra effort to see? If we could smell it, we would push hard for it.

If we could taste it, we would yearn for it.

Yet sometimes, most often maybe, He asks us to push hard even before we begin to experience it. This is faith, and part of faith is just wanting.

Faith is like a bridge we cross only when we want something on the other side so much, we are willing to take the necessary risk. With God, it isn't really risk though because what He has for you is so good. What God has for you will mirror who He is , and He is good.

Peter and John were ordinary, as ordinary as us. Yet they had a desire to follow Jesus and be with Him. Jesus led them around the corner to see what God had for them. And it wasn’t a thing, it was God Himself.

*Gracious Lord, we want to be with You. Increase the sharpness of our desire. Give us an instinctive desire to follow You. In Your Name we pray, Amen.
