How would you respond to life, others, and your daily workplace if you had been kidnapped by your boss and taken away from you home and family and then expected to work for him? How would you treat that boss?
This actually happened once upon a time and the person kidnapped was a servant girl, taken during a war from her home in Israel and relocated to a home in Aram ( Syria ). Separated from friends and family, one would have thought she would have been bitter and full of animosity toward Naaman, her boss, who was the captain of the Syrian army. It would have been natural for her to have waited for just the right moment in time and really gotten back at him.
But not this young girl. In fact, she does just the opposite. When her boss, Naaman, became really ill with the dreaded and deadly leprosy, she spoke to Naaman's wife to whom she answered directly and told her about Elisha, the prophet of God. She told Mrs. Naaman that quite possibly if Naaman could get a meeting with that prophet perhaps he might receive a healing (II Kings 5:1-14). And to make a brief lesson even shorter, that is exactly what happened! At the end of that story, Naaman is fully healed, "...his flesh was restored like the flesh of a little child and he was clean." (vs. 14)
Who would have ever thought that a lowly maidservant living in exile in a foreign country could been so useful in the life of a strong and powerful person and family? She was very young, a foreigner in a not-so-friendly nation; she was personally employed by her kidnapper but she obviously saw herself as a messenger of the Lord. And when the dust settled, her boss had been healed! She had been the catalyst for an incredible, life-altering event! What a joy! What a reward to be so involved in what God is doing in one's workplace!
Her efforts required no training DVD's, no special classes, no theological degrees, no pastorate or doctorate; just a love for her Lord and those around her in her workplace. And, Naaman ever changed! And all this began as she simply told her employer what the Lord can do! (v. 4)
So what job do you have? Are you skeptical that your work-life scenario can really make no difference in the Kingdom of God ? Perhaps you work in an obscure place and very few people even know you. "God could never use me," you say. Think again!
Today's Workplace Challenge: (Read II Kings 5:1-14)
Recognize that if the Lord can use a lowly maidservant from a foreign land He can use you, too!
Open up yourself to new ways He may wish to employ your gifts or your loving heart to bless your employer or boss.
Maybe for you the shoe is on the other foot and your challenge is to bless your employees.
What is it that He may want to do in and through you today?
What illnesses or problems do your associates have that you may be in a position to help in some small or significant way?
Are you willing to point them in the Lord's direction?
Don't let this Tuesday morning slip away from you without asking the Lord to use you as a source of help, direction, and encouragement in one of your co-worker's lives today!
Go ahead! Ask Him now! It's a brand new day! Make it count! You were made for this service! "For consider your calling brethren, that there were not many wise according to the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble; but God has chosen the foolish things...and the base things of the world..." (I Cor. 1:26-27,28)
