Sometimes work can wreck your home if you allow it to become an idol. Some people, men more likely than women, allow themselves to get so engrossed in their work, that they truly neglect family growth and development. We do this in the name of busy schedules, intense job responsibilities, and vocational aspirations. We even do this erroneously in the name of Jesus.
“Once a little boy spent the entire day fishing with his dad, a man who ran a company and worked incessantly. When they got home from the outing, the boy wrote in his diary and the dad journaled his thoughts before bedtime.
The father's entry read: "Missed a lot of work today. Went fishing.. A total waste of my time."
The son's entry read: "Went fishing with my dad today. The greatest day of my life."
What's wrong with this picture? A world of contrast in two perspectives.
A Professor (Dr. Roy Fish) once asked his young daughter what she liked about her dad. She mentioned ten things including
· how he took her fishing,
· taught her how to fly a kite,
· helped her learn to tie her shoes,
· and a list of other things dear to her young heart.
After examining the list, Dr. Fish said it struck him that nothing on the list had anything to do with him spending money on her. All ten were related to him spending time with her.
Father's Day just left 1 week ago. We may have had a special day with our loved ones. Tomorrow, it's back to work, I know. You are where you should be. But let me encourage all of us, men and women to be true to our family. Do not make them suffer because you don't know how to come home from the office.
Love them.
Love them more than our jobs.
Love them more than we do money. We have to work to support them, of course! They benefit greatly from the sacrifices we make at work.
But beware of putting them on the back burner in the name of your calling.
There is often a fine line in this matter. I implore and challenge each of us to "seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness; all these things shall be added unto you." (Matt. 6:33)
Today's Workplace Challenge: Prioritize your life if you need to do so! Seek Christ first. Worship Him alone. Love your job, but not more than Him or your loved ones. Be healthy in the way you view your calling and Be wise to build a solid foundation every day at home.
I challenge you to do something extra special for your spouse today.
Do something for your kids this week to remind them that you love them and that they are of supreme importance of you Of course, they know this: do it anyway!
Don't choose work over family. It isn't necessary.
In God's order, there is room for both and a proper balance to guide you along the way.
Have a great Monday at work...and back home when you get there later today. Take them fishing or go fly a kite or...you figure it out! Enjoy it all. It is all a gift of God. Make it count!
