"The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light. Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying. But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof." Romans 13:12-14
No professional business person arrives at work dressed in beach wear with a surfboard under their arm, and I would imagine no national ambassador sits in their office dressed in a clown suit.
Why is this?
Well, it is because professional business people need to portray their professionalism; and ambassadors need to portray their country in a positive light, that others might see the benefit and have the confidence to invest in their land.
How much more shouldn't we be dressing ourselves appropriately when it comes to our spiritual apparel (which counts for all eternity) as ambassadors and witnesses for the King of Kings, Jesus Christ; in order that we portray the true light of Christ in this world.
In verse 14 Paul encourages us to put on the Lord Jesus Christ and not to make provision for the flesh, to fulfill the lusts thereof. Sadly this is one of the greatest problems which believers face in this day and age.
Too many times we make provision for the flesh.
Too many times we compromise.
Too many times we justify walking along the paths we ourselves know we shouldn't be walking along.
Too many times we don't surrender all.
Too many times we leave the door ajar, rather than closing it tightly and locking it behind us.
Too many times we settle for spiritual rags rather than the robe of righteousness which is from Christ.
Paul says that the night is far spent and the day is at hand and he encourages believers to take off their night clothes, in other words to put off the old man, that which is inappropriate to be clothed in, the works of darkness, and to put on the armour of light, that is to put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him.
When we allow Jesus Christ to clothe us in His righteousness, we will never be ashamed.
Do we truly realize the time?
Do we truly know that now it is high time to awake out of our sleep?
Do we truly know that now our salvation is nearer than anyone might have ever believed?
May we each be greatly encouraged today to know that our spiritual attire is so much more important than our physical attire; and may we not seek to wear the clothing of the desires of this world, but rather to be fully clothed in the armour of light, that is Jesus Christ.
Today, let us put on the armour of light as we walk in the newness of life, putting on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.
