"Don't Follow me, Follow Him"

“He must become greater; I must become less.

The one who comes from above is above all;

the one who is from the earth belongs to the earth,

and speaks as one from the earth.

The one who comes from heaven is above all.”

John 3:30-31(spoken of Jesus by John the Baptist)

John was at the pinnacle of his career as a messenger of God when the crowds began to follow a different teacher, Jesus of Nazareth. Naturally, some of John’s closest followers considered this an undesirable loss of stature for John. They admired this appointed messenger of God who had forsaken the world’s comforts to honor God’s call on his life. He was a great prophet.

Because John was a great prophet, He could see that Jesus was not a prophet. Jesus was not a great man nor the greatest man. He was so totally different that He could only be described as Holy. He came, not from earth, but from heaven. He spoke, not about God, but the very words of God. He was not inspired by the Holy Spirit. He was filled with the Holy Spirit.

In the greatest act of his extraordinary life, John humbled himself to earnestly and joyfully proclaim the superiority of the One from Above. As the best of godly leaders do today, John said, “Don’t follow me, follow Him.”
